My Story

Shobhita’s parents wanted only sons in their family. They falsely believed that having a daughter would only be a financial burden. When Shobhita’s mother became pregnant with her, her parents eagerly awaited the arrival of a son. To their disappointment, Shobhita was born. After her birth, her parents refused to care for her because she is a girl. They decided to hand her over to her grandmother, who had pity on Shobhita and agreed to raise her.

Three years later, Shobhita’s parents gave birth to a son. They were overjoyed by his birth and celebrated the day with new gifts for their son. Although Shobhita’s grandmother sent her to school, her parents planned to have her taken out of school so she could work and earn money for her brother's education instead. Her parents believed there was only value in educating boys.

Shobhita’s grandmother was deeply saddened and worried for Shobhita’s well-being, and so reached out to our social workers for help. After learning about Shobhita’s situation, our partners were able to talk with her parents and intervene on her behalf. Your sponsorship ensures Shobhita is receiving a good education instead of becoming a child laborer. More than that, it will give Shobhita the opportunity to be counseled by our social workers and learn that she is loved and valued as a girl.
