Shanvi is lives in Palnadu with her parents. Her father, a daily wage laborer, had hoped for a son but was disappointed when Shanvi was born. His anger and superstitions led him to mistreat her and her mother, believing Shanvi was bad luck. He neglected her, refused to provide her with nutritious food, and even expressed plans to sell her.
The village alerted IGP social workers about the situation, who immediately visited the family. When questioned, Shanvi’s father admitted to planning to sell her. The mother, devastated, begged for help. The social workers involved the police, and two constables arrived. Upon seeing them, the father backed down, claiming his earlier statements were made in anger. The police issued a stern warning and vowed to monitor the situation.
Though the father’s attitude didn’t change, this intervention marked a critical step in protecting Shanvi and challenging the harmful beliefs he held. Further visits will be necessary to help him understand the importance of equality and respect for all children.
